Peru's mining exports jump nearly 40% from January to May

Peru has reported US$7.8 billion in exports for the first five months of this year.

Peru's Foreign Trade Society, Comex Peru, reported Saturday that Peruvian mining exports totaled US$7.8 billion in the first five months of this year, a 39.7% increase over the same period of 2009.

Southern Peru Copper led mining exports with a total of $1.17 billion, a 98.2% increase over the first five months of last year.

Compania Minera Antamina, the operator of the Antamina poly-metallic mine, ranked second with total exports of $1 billion for an 82.8% increase.

Newmont Mining and Buenaventura's joint venture the Yanacocha gold mine was in third place with $739 million in exports for a 7.54% increase over last year.

Copper miner Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde, whose majority shareholder is Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold, reported a 60.6% increase in mining exports to $640.6 million to rank fourth.

Minera Barrick Minsquichilca, which operates the Pierina mine, ranked fifth with total exports of $616.2 million, a 26% increase over the same period of 2009.

Japan and China are the main importers of Peruvian copper and copper concentrate while Switzerland and Canada are the main buyers of its gold.
