LONDON -

Swedish headquartered diversified mining equipment manufacturer, Sandvik Mining and Construction, has completed assembly of a new compact bucket wheel excavator, including the beltwagon, for Mátra Kraftwerk G.AG in Hungary. After completing the detailed design and the fabrication of the main components, the assembly of the entire unit started at the beginning of November. Assembly was conducted according to a demanding schedule, with up to some 130 erectors working on the site every day.

The first extraction level of Bükkábrány opencast lignite mine trial operations will commence on schedule at the end of June 2009.

The new bucket wheel excavator with a total weight of around 1,650 tons has a 28-meter (92-foot) boom on which the 12-meter (40-foot) diameter bucket wheel is mounted. The power output of the bucket wheel alone, fitted with 16 buckets, is around 1,100 kW - the entire power output of the machine (including the beltwagon) amounts to 3,200 kW. The entire unit is designed to generate a conveying annual capacity of 12 million bank cubic meters (15.7 million bank cubic yards).

Sandvik considers this project to be of considerable significance in that it has enabled the company to take another important step into the European open pit mining sector and has demonstrated its competence as one of the world's leading suppliers of open pit mining equipment.
